The Vunga Cooperative was founded in 2009 and has rapidly expanded to include 260 total members from the surrounding area, 186 of which are men and 74 are women. Farmers in the area traditionally dried their cherries at home before selling them locally or on the commodities market for very little return. Since the wet mill was built, their farming practices and quality have improved massively, as has the prices their excellent coffees fetch. They have even won the prestigious Cup of Excellence competition twice, in 2012 and 2014.
Outside of their core members, the cooperative also offers processing to more than 900 unaffiliated local farmers who sell them their coffees. While the haul from these farmers is equivalent to a modest 75 pounds of roasted coffee, the better prices Vunga offers them helps improve their income and thus their way of life.
NOTE: We roast and package our coffee to order every Tuesday for postage the following Wednesday. To ensure we get your order in time, please place them before 5pm on Monday.
Post-harvest, this washed process coffee undergoes careful fermentation for 6 hours before being fully washed down to the bean. It is then dried on 25 raised African beds over 35 days.
