On Sunday 3rd June, Guatemala experienced its worst volcanic eruption in 100 years when Volcan de Fuego erupted. Over 1 million people have been affected and the death toll since has tragically continued to rise.
Many of the areas affected are communities who rely solely on coffee for their livelihood, with uncertainty as to what the repercussions of this environmental disaster will be for their crops going forwards. Ash and debris coats much of their farmland.
Coffee Bird, a 6th generation green coffee supplier with members working and living in Guatemala year-round, have been working at origin for years and have seen first-hand the devastation caused. They have started a GoFundMe page ( https://uk.gofundme.com/CoffeeBirdGuatemalaDisasterRelief ) dedicated to raising money to help those affected in any way that they can, including funeral expenses and help for children burned and injured by the eruption. Money will also go towards helping get resources for these communities to rebuild their future without the burden of all the potential losses that could stop any such attempts in their tracks.
To help do our part, we have bought 3 sacks of coffee from the Santa Clara Wet Mill in Huehuetenango. All profits we make from selling this coffee will be donated to Coffee Bird’s fundraising efforts to aid them as best we can.
